CLEAR LAKE – A bus broke down on Interstate 35 near Clear Lake early Saturday morning, stranding dozens, and authorities coordinated a rescue effort.

According to the Clear Lake Fire Department, the incident took place just after midnight on Saturday, August 16, on Interstate 35 near Clear Lake. A passenger bus with 56 passengers had some kind of mechanical problem and stopped along the Interstate.

“We had a passenger bus breakdown on the interstate tonight with 56 passengers,” the Clear Lake Fire Department said. “The bus was disabled and we needed assistance in helping the passengers off the interstate into town.”

Clear Lake fire said that Clear Lake Schools assisted them by sending a bus and a driver to pickup the stranded tourists.

“Thank you to the Clear Lake Schools for sending a bus and driver out tonight to haul the passengers back to town to get them off the interstate,” they said. Apparently, some of the stranded were taken to the Pilot truck stop to wait for further assistance and use restrooms.

Also assisting in the incident were Clear Lake police, the Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office, CLPD, and the Iowa State Patrol.
