MASON CITY – Mason City Park and Recreation hosted a Twins Baseball camp Saturday at Muse Norris baseball complex.

The Twins Baseball organization conducted the camp for kids 6-16 years of age. Ken Mauer, uncle of Joe Mauer an all-star catcher that plays with the current Twins team said, “We want to make sure the kids have fun and learn about success.” He mentioned that the group of coaches start preparing for the camps at Twin’s Spring Training in Florida. They conduct camps around the midwest from April until August. All the coaches have played or coached at the pro level.

Some of the kids thought it was really cool to play ball with the pro-baseball players and coaches. One boy we talked to said, “I liked the hitting the best, Joe Mauer is my favorite baseball player.” Ken Mauer, who also played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, said they watch for talent in the older age groups and will research players that they feel could play at a higher level.

About 50 kids from the North Iowa area attended the camp. A similar camp will be conducted Sunday, May 13th in Albert Lea starting at10:30 a.m. and again at noon at Hammer Field.

The camp was free for kids. All campers received a free Twins Magazine at the end of the session. The representative from the Mason City Park and Recreation said they were happy for the good weather and it was nice to see the kids having fun.
