King and Queen in Parade

MASON CITY – Homecoming conjures memories of days gone by for a lot of us, but memories in the making for Mason City High School students this week.

The week started out with Monday being Pajama Day, Tuesday was Twin Day, Wednesday was Character Day, Thursday was Class Color Day and Friday, of course, was Spirit Day. Spirit Day features everyone participating by wearing black and red and showing school spirit.

Showing school spirit were Seniors Sierra Klouse and Melinda Grouette, “The Seniors won everything this week, except for the float. We came in fourth.” They were fired up, waiting for more of the festivities to begin.

The Mason City Volleyball coach, Coach Julie Brunsvold said, “The school’s spirit has really picked up this year. Behaviors have been really great and the middle school’s participation has really picked up.”

You can’t have Homecoming without a King and Queen. The Pep Rally at the High School relieved the anticipation to see who it would be this year. Jeff Dobrzynski was announced King and his Queen is Chase Crane. The Queen’s Court consists of Emily Goetz, Alexis Lichty, Brooke Lichty, Morgan Richards and Payton Mellman. The King’s Men consists of Carter Devary, Jack Esser, Josh Saltou, Blake Spotts and Sam Skogen.

The High School Pep Rally was hosted by teachers that dressed up like the well known characters of Super Mario Brothers. Sarah Bouska was Princess Peach, Duane Bouska was Mario and Nick Trasle was Luigi.

After the Pep Rally, the students got lined up for the parade. The parade started at the High School, went down East State Street and ended up at Central Park where the Eleventh Annual Community Pep Rally was held this year.

The Cheerleaders started out by getting the public fired up out with a cheer. They seemed to think that it was not loud enough, so they made the crowd to it again. They wanted it done louder and with more enthusiasm.

The Cheerleaders were getting the crowd pumped up, the football players were announced, and King Jeff and Queen Chase were introduced to the public.

“There is just so much more school spirit this year. It seems like so many more people have got involved,” says Tanya Rowe, mother of Varsity Golfer, Jordan Rowe. “It’s just a lot of fun to see them exceed and to be part of the school spirit. It’s been a great week.”

The week was fun and fun of spirit, but that didn’t bring in a win for the football team. The Mohawks took the field, being led by Head Coach Justin Penner. The Mohawks had a couple early good runs, but had an upsetting first half with the score of 0-24, and that’s how it finished. No score in the second half. They hustled and tried hard to get across the end zone, but just couldn’t make it.

The crowd was entertained at half-time by the High School Marching Band and the introduction of the Royal Court. T-shirts and mini footballs were tossed into the stands for eager fans to catch.

The Homecoming Dance is tonight at the Lincoln Intermediate School at 9:00 and ending at midnight.
