James William Smith, son of Gordon and Elaine (Gappa) Smith, was born March 13, 1949 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He received his education in Emmetsburg, graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1967.
Bill, as he was known to his family and friends, farmed with his father for many years and later had an acreage near Ringsted. Bill was a talented mechanic and enjoyed working on tractors, cars and other farm machinery. Bill also helped Doc and Marcie Frevert at the Riverdale Ranch and Wade Lundgren on his farm.
Bill was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg.
Bill passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Elaine Smith; a sister, Cathy Peters; a brother, Tom Smith; and brother-in-law, Dan Orwig.
He is survived by his brothers, Charles (Chris) Smith of Indianola, Iowa, Pat (Kathy) Smith of Graettinger, Iowa and Andy Smith of Graettinger, Iowa; his sisters, Connie Smith of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Karen Orwig of Rolfe, Iowa and Kim Smith of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
