AMES – No. 4 Iowa State defeated No. 17 West Virginia, 29-11, on senior night Friday inside Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones won seven of 10 matches, including four with bonus points.
David Carr picked up a top-10 victory on his senior night while sophomore Sam Hrabovsky and freshman Tate Naaktgeboren each made their dual debuts against the Mountaineers.
Evan Frost, Cody Chittum and MJ Gaitan – all underclassmen – secured bonus points for ISU. Yonger Bastida capped the night with a tech fall at heavyweight for ISU’s fourth bonus-point win.
Iowa State (11-2, 4-1 Big 12) owned a 21-13 takedown advantage over West Virginia (9-4, 2-4 Big 12).
Kysen Terukina got Iowa State off to a solid start with a 10-7 decision over Jett Strickenberger at 125 pounds. Terukina was better in the later stages of the match, getting a takedown with four seconds left in the second period to take the lead. A takedown and two near fall points with 30 seconds remaining in the third period earned the Cyclone a come-from-behind win.
At 133 pounds, Evan Frost pushed Iowa State’s dual lead to 8-0 after two matches with a tech fall against Mason Mills. Frost used three takedowns and two sets of four near fall points to win 17-1 in 3:54.
Hrabovsky, wrestling on short notice, battled tough but fell to No. 10 Jordan Titus, 11-3, in the 141-pound match.
In a highly-anticipated bout between top-10 wrestlers at 149 pounds, No. 10 Casey Swiderski got the best of a long and lanky No. 7 Ty Watters. A Watters takedown gave the Mountaineer a 4-0 lead with 1:37 left in the match, but Swiderski’s pace eventually paid off. Swiderski secured a takedown with 15 seconds remaining in the third period and put on a tough ride to force sudden victory. Much the aggressor, the Michigan native earned the winning takedown on a beautiful ankle pick to earn a 7-4 decision.
Chittum was solid in his return to the mat after an injury held him out last weekend. The Cyclone secured a 13-5 major decision over Caleb Downing pushed ISU’s dual lead to 15-4 at the halfway point.
Carr picked up another top-10 victory, his sixth of the season, on his senior night, defeating No. 8 Peyton Hall, 10-5. The Cyclone pushed the pace and left the mat with a standing ovation from a grateful Hilton crowd.
At 174 pounds, Gaitan brought the crowd back to hits feet in short order. The California native caught No. 17 Brody Conley in a headlock and secured a fall in only 38 seconds.
Naaktgeboren took on No. 30 Dennis Robin at 184 pounds and dropped a 15-5 major decision. Another Mountaineer victory at 197 pounds brought the dual score to 24-11 before the heavyweight bout between Yonger Bastida and Michael Wolfgram.
Bastida gave up the first takedown of the match, only the second he’s allowed this season, but cruised to a 23-8 tech fall.
