OBIT: Mary E. Montgomery

Mary E. Montgomery, 81, of Mason City and formerly of Northwood, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A private memorial service will be held at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel.

Mary’s family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, January 20, 2022 from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City.

In lieu of flowers and custom remembrances, memorials may be given in Mary’s honor to Stebens Children Theater, Homestead Assisted Living, or the Bolan United Methodist Church.

Mary Ellen was born on October 9, 1940 in Blooming Prairie, MN to Ben and Edith (Adams) Abrahams. The family soon moved to Northwood where Mary attended school, graduating from Northwood High School in 1958.

Mary was united in marriage to Thomas Montgomery on March 30, 1960 at the Bolan United Methodist Church in Bolan and soon relocated to Coker, Alabama where they had four children, Michael, Lori, Tina, and Amy. Mary and her children returned to Northwood in 1969.

For a few years Mary operated an in home daycare before returning to college to obtain her LPN. She dedicated 15 years to the Lutheran Retirement home in Northwood before joining Dr. David Hansen’s office in Northwood.

She returned to school in 1990 to obtain her RN degree from NIACC. She then worked as Director of Nursing and as the Administrator of Homestead Assisted Living in Mason City where she worked until her retirement in 2010 at the age of 70.

In her free time Mary enjoyed sewing, reading, and socializing with friends. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and loved football season. She was a talented seamstress and spent many years completing alterations at Formalities.

Those grateful in sharing in her life are her children, Michael (Lisa) Montgomery, Alabama, Lori Montgomery, Mason City, Tina (Pat) McCullough, Cedar Rapids, and Amy (Kirk) Montgomery, Osage; grandchildren, Elizabeth Rocha, Michael (Raven) Montgomery, Jake (Nessa) Felper, Nate (Emily) Felper, Gianna Kittleson and Bryleigh Kittleson; great grandchildren, Marlo and Miles Rocha, Gray Felper, Kaizer Felper, and Grant Montgomery, who is due in March; brothers, Vernon Abrahams, Mason City, Duane (Karen) Abrahams, Northwood, and Allan (Kathie) Black, Nebraska; as well as her extended family members and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Margaret, Sharon, Barbara, and Roger Abrahams, Betty Tesch, Shirley Johnson, and David Abrahams; and her nephew, Kevin Abrahams.
