SPIRIT LAKE, IOWA – An armed man who was with a female juvenile and ran from cops in Spirit Lake is going to prison on a felony gun conviction.

On Friday, May 8th, 2020, at approximately 11:00 pm, the Spirit Lake Police Department responded to the Walmart parking lot for an incomplete 9-1-1 call. Officers located 18-year-old Buomkuoth Lol of Carroll, Iowa, and a juvenile female sitting in a black 2011 Chevrolet Cruz.

Upon investigation, officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. During a search of Lol’s person, a handgun was located. Lol then fled on foot and a foot pursuit ensued. Officers lost sight of Lol during the foot pursuit and requested the assistance of the Estherville Police Department’s K9, Max, to aid in tracking him.

Max was able locate Lol, and he was taken into custody without further incident. Lol was booked into the Dickinson County Jail on several state charges charges.

Later, as part of a guilty plea, Lol admitted on May 8, 2020 he possessed a gun and .40 caliber ammunition. Lol admitted to knowing he was prohibited from possessing guns after being convicted of attempted burglary in Buena Vista County on November 5, 2019. Lol was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand. Lol was sentenced to 27 months’ imprisonment on the federal gun charge. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Lol is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The juvenile female was released to the custody of her parents.
