Two Oelwein residents airlifted to hospital after motorcycle hits deer

FAYETTE COUNTY, IOWA – Two Oelwein residents were airlifted to a hospital after the motorcycle they were riding on hit a deer.

On June 15, 2019 at 1:20 PM, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office took a 911 call reporting an accident in which a motorcycle hit a deer and two people were injured at Bear and Cedar Road. An investigation determined that Michael James Rettinger, age 58 from Oelwein was operating a 2011 Harley Davidson northbound on Cedar Road when a deer entered the roadway and was struck. A passenger on the motorcycle, Sharon Kime-Rettinger, age 56 from Oelwein, was thrown from the motorcycle onto the shoulder of the roadway. The motorcycle left the roadway and entered the east ditch and struck a tree. Michael was thrown off as the motorcycle entered the ditch. Both victims were airlifted from the scene to Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in Lacrosse for injuries. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Wadena Fire Dept and First Responders, Gunderson Air, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic Air Care, Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources and Tri State Ambulance.
