Iowa legislature unanimously passes police reform bill

Iowa capitol

DES MOINES – Proving that lawmakers could actually take decisive, fast action, the Iowa legislature has unanimously passed a sweeping police reform bill.

The bipartisan effort (98-0 in the House and 49-0 in the Senate) resulted in a bill that: bans chokeholds by police; bans rehiring of officers fired for misconduct; and makes it easier to prosecute killings by police.

Gov. Kim Reynolds released the following statement after the Iowa House and Senate voted to pass House File 2647, legislation to reform policing in the state of Iowa and allow for more oversight and accountability:

“In Iowa, we know how to sit down at the table, listen to each other and work together to move forward. Over the past several days, leaders of the Iowa legislature came together with shared goals and a commitment for action.

“This was truly a bipartisan effort with all of us working side by side. I want to thank Rep. Ako Abu-Samad, Rep. Ras Smith, Majority Leader Jack Whitver, Minority Leader Janet Peterson, Speaker Pat Grassley, and Minority Leader Todd Pritchard for working together to bring meaningful change.”

“These problems didn’t arise overnight and they won’t be fixed in a day. We are just getting started, but our work together shows Iowa is willing to have the tough conversations and to look past our differences to find common ground and a brighter future for all Iowans.”

While your at it under the golden dome remember that the pandemic is still in it’s first wave. China is now seeing the second wave. India is doomed. Florida is now tasting the fruits of their labor. All for naught. It’s hammer time down there. Look how long it has taken to get rolling after the spring break fiasco. Arizona not fairing well either. And are you sure heat don’t spread it. In the end you will see the folly of opening up too soon for the sake of money. Give it another 18 months and no one will want to be in politics. It’s gunna git ugly.

It takes long to become a licensed cosmologist than is does to be police officer…. there needs to be better training for new officers. Maybe a civics class or study the Constitution a little closer

Another shooting by police in Atlanta. RIP

What’s needed is transparency. Look at the cops’ disciplinary records. Find out which ones are the bad ones, and get rid of them. That is, unless the P.D. has something to hide.

A gesture of or token for approval. No the real reform is going to be revolutionary in scope across America. Police unions will be brushed aside with ease. Rural Iowa should not be affected as much as major population areas. Bully behavior will be at zero. It’s a good bet they’ll have special jails to house police in who break the law. The Democracy controls the military. Make no mistake about that either. The pen is mightier than the sword!

We can hurry in record time to pass this nonsense, but anything that really matters takes years…
Thanks for the legislation to weaken a state and make it more thug friendly!!!
Nice work you bums…

Are the disciplinary records of the M.C. policemen hidden from public view, or are the citizens allowed to see them? If they are hidden, why are they hidden? And if they aren’t, what do we have to do to gain access to them? Transparency in the history of abuse perpetrated by an officer should be available to the public. A few years ago, a policewoman was at a police kegger, got drunk, hit a car, left the scene, and the issue seemed to be covered up. She even may be still on the force.

It’s to bad that higher government can’t work together.
