College Basketball: Iowa State beats #16 Seaton Hall, 76-66

AMES – Tyrese Haliburton, Rasir Bolton and George Conditt IV scored 17 points each to lead Iowa State (6-3, 0-0 Big 12) past No. 16 Seton Hall (6-3, 0-0 Big East), 76-66, on Sunday night at Hilton Coliseum.

A spirited defensive effort kept the Cyclones in the game early despite shooting woes. After making its first shot of the game, Iowa State went just 1-of-17 from the field over the next 9:37, struggling to find the bottom of the net against the stingy Pirates. Iowa State forced 11 Seton Hall turnovers in the opening 20 minutes to make up for their cold shooting.

Prentiss Nixon would knock down Iowa State’s first triple of the game with 9:29 to play in the first half, sparking a 9-2 run to cut Seton Hall’s lead to 16-15. Sophomore big man Conditt IV then found his groove late in the period, scoring six straight Cyclone points to give Iowa State a 22-21 advantage with 2:14 to play in the first.

ISU knocked down four of its final five field goal attempts to end the half, taking a 28-26 lead into the intermission. In total, Iowa State shot 11-of-35 (31.4 percent) from the field in the first half, making just 2-of-12 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Junior big man Solomon Young scored six of Iowa State’s first eight points after the break, as the Cyclones raced out to a 36-28 advantage with 17:30 to play. The Pirates proceeded to run off six-straight points of their own, and a see-saw second half was under way.

Seton Hall took its first lead of the second half at the 11:56 mark on an Anthony Nelson and-one. However, it would be the Cyclones, behind the momentum of a raucous Hilton Coliseum crowd, that would surge late. A 7-0 run, bookended by Haliburton, pushed Iowa State ahead for good at 55-50 with 5:30 to play. Haliburton would later knock down a triple with 2:30 to play to stretch the Cyclone lead to 62-53.

The Cyclones came up clutch at the free throw line, knocking down 16-of-17 at the charity stripe over the final 4:19 to put the game away.

Players of Note
George Conditt IV put up 17 points on an efficient 5-of-8 from the field, knocking down 7-of-8 attempts at the free throw line. The sophomore pulled down six rebounds and also tallied five blocks on the night.
