Iowa man allegedly strikes police officer with curtain rod; then meets wrong end of taser

ESTHERVILLE, IOWA – An Iowa man was lucky to be tazed and not shot Tuesday after striking a police officer with a curtain rod, causing an injury.

On January 17, 2017 at 9:37 AM, Estherville Police received a complaint from the Emmet County Veterans Affairs Office regarding threatening messages that they had recently received. Police were able to identify the suspect during the investigation.

A short time later, Estherville police arrived at 9 South 9th Street, and made contact with the male suspect at the door of the residence. The male exited the house and attacked the officer with a wooden closet rod, striking the officer in the head. The officer deployed his taser and subdued the male who was taken into custody at that time. Both the officer and the suspect received injuries during the attack. The suspect was treated and released following a visit to Avera Holy Family Hospital.

The male was identified as 52-year-old Parish Reed of Estherville. Reed was charged with Assault on a Peace Officer a Class D Felony, Harassment 1st degree an Aggravated Misdemeanor, and Interference with Official Acts a Serious Misdemeanor. Reed was transported to the Emmet County Jail where he will appear in front of a Magistrate.
