AURORA, IOWA – A standoff with police this weekend in a small Iowa town involved a man shooting at police before he was apprehended.
On Saturday, October 08, 2016 at approximately 10:53 PM, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible domestic disturbance at an address located at 306 Buffalo Street in Aurora, Iowa. Deputies were subsequently dispatched to the scene.
Approximately 20 minutes later, at 11:12 PM, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office received another call that this incident had now turned into a standoff situation with a male threatening a female at the residence with a weapon. Deputies arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with the male inside the residence. During the course of the standoff, the male inside the residence fired shots towards law enforcement that were staged outside. A negotiator was then used and after approximately two hours after the intial call, the male subject was taken into custody outside the residence. No injuries were reported to the male, the female victim involved in the standoff or by any law enforcement personnel. The male was the only individual to fire shots during this incident.
Following the incident, Dennis Edgar Chamberlain, age 55 of Aurora, was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder (class B felony), Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon (class C felony), Domestic Abuse Assault with Dangerous Weapon (aggravated misdemeanor), Reckless Use of Firearm Causing Property Damage (aggravated misdemeanor) and False Imprisonment (serious misdemeanor). Chamberlain was transported to and held at the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol Tactical Team, Aurora Fire Department and Oelwein Mercy Ambulance Service.
