Officer Dettman pries up the storm grate to help a citizens retrieve lost keys

MASON CITY – Police do not just arrest people – often times, they help, too.

This was the case Sunday afternoon in downtown Mason City. A man had dropped his keys in Commercial Alley, just outside the Hungry Mind restaurant. To complicate things, unfortunately, they had fallen into a storm drain.

Police were called, with the man stating the lost keys weren’t real far down the drain. Officer Brent Dettman dutifully appeared on the scene at about 1:52 PM to assist. According to bystanders, he tried a couple different ways to get the storm drain lid up and, eventually, was able to retrieve the man’s keys.  He was then on his way.

No one was arrested or taken to jail in this incident.

Far to often the police don’t receive the credit they deserve.
