Man accused of pulling knife on cops charged with violating no-contact order 3 times

MASON CITY – A convicted Mason City domestic abuser who allegedly pulled a knife on police last month during a stand-off can’t leave a protected party alone, according to new charges brought against him.

Chad Yarger, age 24, of Mason City is accused of 3 counts of violation of a no-contact order against his alleged victim in a domestic abuse assault incident that took place on January 24, 2015. As police were searching for him the next evening, officers made verbal contact with Yarger at 1517 North Quincy Avenue through the front door. He told the officers to meet him at the backdoor and when they got there, he was waiting for them, holding a knife. He was not compliant with the officers initially, but they were able to talk him into dropping the knife. He was taken to jail and has remained there ever since, charged with Aggravated Domestic Assault Enhanced, an Aggravated Misdemeanor; Assault with a Dangerous Weapon on Peace Officers, a Class “D” Felony; and Interference with Official Acts, a Class “D” Felony. He is being held on no bond at this time.

While being held, Yarger allegedly made at least 3 phone calls from the jail to the protected party in the no-contact order imposed by a judge in this case. Each count can carry up to 7 days in jail if he is found guilty.

Yarger has entered a not guilty plea to his earlier crimes and awaits a jury trial on April 7. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for March 27.

Yarger was accused of domestic assault in 2012 and pleaded guilty the following year. He just completed a batterer’s education program in 2014.
