IOWA CITY – Former University of Iowa offensive lineman Pete McMahon will serve as honorary captain when the Hawkeyes hosts Wisconsin on Saturday in Kinnick Stadium (11:06 a.m., ABC/ESPN2).
McMahon joined the Hawkeye program as a walk-on from Dubuque, Iowa (Wahlert HS) and played a key role in Iowa’s success while earning letters each year of his career, 2001-04. He started every game as a senior, taking over the right tackle position while helping the Hawkeyes earn a share of the 2004 Big Ten title.
McMahon helped the Hawkeyes post a four-year mark of 38-12, as Iowa shared Big Ten titles in both 2002 and 2004 while playing in four consecutive bowl games. The Hawkeyes won 11 games in 2002 and posted 10 victories in both 2003 and 2004.
McMahon and the Hawkeyes won the 2001 Alamo Bowl, 2004 Outback Bowl and 2005 Capital One Bowl, while falling to 5th-ranked USC in the 2003 Orange Bowl. Iowa defeated 15th-ranked Florida in the Outback Bowl and 11th-ranked LSU, the defending national champion, in the Capital One Bowl.
McMahon earned honorable mention all-Big Ten honors as a senior and was named a permanent team captain on offense. He also earned the Coaches Appreciation Award and was selected to participate in the East-West Shrine game. McMahon was a sixth round selection (Oakland) in the 2005 NFL Draft. He was a member of the Hamburg Sea Devils when that team won the NFL Europe World Bowl in 2007.
McMahon will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for Saturday’s pregame coin toss. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game, and on the sidelines during the contest.
