Bomb threat closes tunnel linking US, Canada

By Elisha Anderson and Gina Damrom, Detroit Free Press –

DETROIT — The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel was shut down Thursday afternoon as authorities investigated a bomb threat.

The tunnel was cleared out and traffic was being rerouted to the Ambassador Bridge, Detroit Police Inspector Don Johnson said. There were no specifics to the threat called into Canadian authorities, he said.

“A bomb threat was called in on the Canadian side,” said Neal Belitsky, president and CEO of Detroit Windsor Tunnel. “Local emergency responders are on the scene investigating.”

A K9 unit began inspecting inside the tunnel shortly before 2:30 p.m. Detroit fire and police officials are on the scene, Detroit fire spokesman Chief Kwaku Atara said.

At this point, the Detroit Police Department has only requested that a fire engine and EMS rig be on standby at the scene, he said.

A spokesman for the Windsor police could not be immediately reached for comment.
