WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin announced today that North Iowa Area Community College has been awarded a grant of $448,253 from the U.S. Department of Education’s Title III Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP). The funding will be used to improve training opportunities for faculty, create a student engagement program for part time students, and help modernize NIACC’s education system by making more courses available online, implementing new instructional models, and harnessing new classroom technologies. Harkin is the Chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee that funds health, education, and labor efforts as well as the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee that authorizes the program.

“Providing the resources to strengthen and improve our community colleges supports the creation of a well-trained workforce and will open doors to new opportunities for Iowans,” said Harkin. “I congratulate North Iowa Area Community College on this award, which will help the school achieve its goal of expanding and improving educational opportunities in the community.”

SIP provides grants to institutions of higher education to improve their academic programs, institutional management, and fiscal stability. Funding is targeted to institutions that enroll a large proportion of financially disadvantaged students and have low per-student expenditures.
