Beatrice “Jane” Ramon, 77, died Monday, January 26, 2026, at the Osage Rehabilitation Center in Osage, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 2, 2026, with Pastor Linda Johnson-Prestholt officiating at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 Frist Ave North. Clear Lake, Iowa 50428. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., on Sunday February 1, 2026 at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 First Avenue North, Clear Lake, Iowa 50428. Inurnment will take place at Brush Point Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in care of the family and will later be honored in Jane’s memory.
Beatrice Jane was born May 31, 1948, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of Ed Buchanan Sr. and Susan (Gummert) Gottfried. She received her early education in Marshalltown, graduating with the Class of 1966. Jane began working in the food industry at a young age as a carhop at Kim’s Drive Inn.
Later relocating to the North Iowa area, Jane and her sister Joyce began their working years alongside their father Ed and his business partner, Chuck, Butcher’s Steakhouse, which opened in 1985. This experience sparked Jane’s lifelong passion for food and community.
Jane met Alvino Ramon in Mason City, and together they made their home in Fertile, where they raised their family. She also worked at the Half Moon in Clear Lake. Jane had an in-home daycare in Ventura thoroughly loved providing care to all her “kids”. In 1995, Jane and Al opened the Downtown Fertile Café, which became a beloved gathering place, serving breakfast and lunch and Taco Tuesday Nights; while welcoming neighbors and friends for many years. Jane retired in 2013, her family legacy continues today through her daughter Laurie with Butcher’s Steakhouse Catering.
Jane loved her family and her community deeply. She took great pride in her work and cherished time spent with loved ones. A devoted prayer warrior, she truly believed in the power of prayer. In 2014, Jane and Al moved to Nora Springs to help care for their grandchildren. Jane loved attending all of her grandchildren’s school and social events, and in Nora Springs, she became everyone’s “Grandma Jane.”
Jane especially cherished time spent with her sister Joyce and enjoyed outings with her brother Frankie, taking him on cruises or any fun activity he wished. She loved 1950s and 1960s music and was known for her unconditional love for her family and community.
Jane is survived by her husband of 57 years, Al Ramon; children, Laurie Buchanan (Dan Bolz), Tami (Dan) Young, and Vino (Mary) Ramon; grandchildren, Jacob Ramon (Sophia), Emma Ramon (Jake), Danielle Bolz, Michael, Joshua and Olivia Young, Dillon Bolz, Jon Ramon, Roxanne Ramon, and Paul Mason; step-daughter, Angie Ramon; multiple great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Ed Buchanan Jr.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike Hanson, Ralph (Buffy) Ramon, and Ray (Debbie) Ramon; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Susan Gottfried and Ed Buchanan Sr.; her son Marcus Buchanan in infancy; brother, Rueben “Frankie” Gottfried Jr.; sister, Joyce Hanson; parents-in-law, Jose and Matilda Ramon; sister-in-law, Jan Buchanan; five brothers-in-law; extended family member Chuck Waage; and her beloved dog, Rosco.
