RURAL WEBSTER CITY – A tragic collision claimed the life of a Northern Iowa teen Friday as he drove his tractor to school.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a two-vehicle accident took place on February 28, 2025, in rural Hamilton county, Iowa. At 6:28 AM that morning, a farm tractor operated by 16-year-old Logan Baldwin of Webster City was southbound on White Fox Road near 203rd Street, just north of Webster City. At this location, a 2007 Toyota operated by 69-year-old Brian Vandeer of Webster City approached the tractor, also southbound, and rear-ended the farm implement vehicle, sending it rolling into a ditch.

As a result of the collision, Logan Baldwin was thrown from the tractor and pronounced deceased at the scene. Vandeer was taken to Van Diest Medical Center.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Hamilton county sheriff, Webster City police, Webster City fire, Van Diest EMS, and others.

In the wake of the tragic accident, the Webster City School District released a statement to the community:

Mary Ellen Draeger, Secretary

Dear Families,

Dave Stokes, President Eric Patterson, Vice President Cindy Iee, Director Scott Oswald, Director Trey Seiser, Director

It is with deep sadness that I share this message with you. We have learned that one of our high school students has died after being involved in a motor vehicle accident on the way to school this morning.

Out of respect for the family, we are not sharing the student’s name at this time.

Counselors will be available at each of our schools to assist students who may be struggling to process this terrible news. We encourage anyone who needs support to visit the counseling office at any time. Our counselors are here to help.

I ask that we all support one another as we grieve together as a school community. Please join me in keeping the student’s family and friends in our thoughts.

Sincerely,
Matt Beminghaus Superintendent
