AMES – An Iowa man is now charged with animal abuse after shooting his dog in the head and leaving him in a frigid field.

On January 14, 2025, Ames Animal Control responded to a report of an injured dog (A.K.A.-Good Boy) found near Lark Avenue and SE 16th Street. Good Boy was transported to a vet clinic, where bullet fragments were found in his skull. Good Boy received veterinarian care and medical treatment until January 21 when he was released to the Animal Shelter. Good Boy continues to recover at his foster care home.

A police officer and animal control officers located the owner of the dog, Zachary B. Bale, age 33, of Ames. The owner admitted to shooting the dog and leaving it in a field near SE 16th Street. Bale was arrested for Animal Abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor and Animal Neglect Resulting in Serious Injury, an aggravated misdemeanor, on February 21.
