Several hurt in two-car accident near Thornton

THORNTON – Several people were hurt Sunday in a two-car accident near Thornton.

On July 12, 2020 at approximately 1:33 PM, Cerro Gordo County Deputies responded to a 2 vehicle accident with injuries at the corner of Balsam Avenue and 150th Street. The first vehicle was traveling southbound on Balsam Ave., a red 2005 Chevy Express Van driven by Eric Pluff, age 41 of Alexander, IA. The second vehicle was traveling westbound on 150th St. towards Balsam Ave., a green 2009 Pontiac G5 driven by Peter Rieffer, age 22 of Garreston, SD. Rieffer was unable to stop at the stop sign and entered onto Balsam Ave. into the pathway of Pluffs vehicle where they collided. Both vehicles went into the southwest ditch and came to rest. Pluff’s vehicle landed upright and Rieffer’s vehicle landed on it’s driver side. Rieffer was transported to Mercy ER by Mercy Air Med and all other occupants of Pluff’s vehicle sought out medical attention on their own.

Rieffer’s injuries were not released, but all occupants were wearing their seat belts. Rieffer was cited for failure to stop at the stop sign.

The investigation continues.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Mercy Air Med, Mason City Fire, Thornton EMT’s and Meservey EMT’s.
