Fatal shooting this past weekend in downtown Iowa City

IOWA CITY – An Iowa City man is facing first-degree murder charges after a shooting this past weekend in the popular bed mall area of downtown.

A charge of attempted murder has been upgraded to first-degree murder following the shooting death of 22-year-old Kaleek Asham Douglas Jones, Iowa City police said Wednesday. He died from a direct result of injuries sustained from a shooting on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017.

Lamar Cheyenne Wilson, 21, of Iowa City had previously been charged with three counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, and three counts of attempted murder, and has now been charged with murder in the first degree. One of the previous counts of attempted murder was upgraded as a result of Jones’ death.  On the above date at about 1:35 AM, officers responded to several shots fired in the Pedestrian Mall. Officers were able to take Wilson into custody a short distance away and located two firearms near his person. During an interview, Wilson admitted to firing several rounds at other subjects. Three subjects were transported to a local hospital with gun shot wounds. One of the subjects, identified as Kaleek Jones, suffered a fatal gunshot wound and died on August 29th, 2017 due to the injuries.

Donte Ronnel Taylor, 21, of Cedar Rapids remains in custody on the initial charges of control of a firearm by a felon, trafficking in stolen weapons, and carrying weapons.

The investigation into this matter remains ongoing by the Iowa City Police Department’s Investigations Unit and additional charges are possible pending the results of the investigation. The ICPD is being assisted in the investigation by the University of Iowa Police Department, the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Johnson County Attorney’s Office.
