MASON CITY – A Rockwell man accused of felony domestic abuse who sources say speaks little or no English will soon have his day in court.
Victor Mateo Lopez, age 23, was arrested late in the evening of July 21, 2015, in Rockwell when a deputy responded to a domestic abuse situation. Lopez was charged with felony domestic abuse assault involving strangulation as well as providing false information to the deputy. He was jailed and then released after posting $5,000 bond.
However, Lopez failed to appear in court on August 18 and a warrant for his arrest was issued by a judge. Hampton police caught up with Lopez on October 1 and he was brought back to the Cerro Gordo county jail, this time held on $10,000 bond.
Sources say that Lopez speaks little or no English, and an interpreter was appointed by a judge. Lopez pleaded not guilty on October 20 and has been held in jail ever since.
Lopez’ public defender filed a motion to suppress evidence in the case. Allegedly, as told to NIT by a source connected to the case, there may have been a language barrier when Lopez was read his Miranda Rights when he was arrested. On February 16, a judge granted his attorney’s motion to suppress evidence in the case. The same source tells NIT that Lopez’ victim “had marks all over her body” as a result of the domestic abuse incident and Lopez “had his hand on her neck”.
Lopez is now set for a jury trial on March 15, 2016.

I wonder who called the cops. Most Latinos never call them no matter what because they are illegal. In FL, there will be 20 people living in a single-wide trailer and they never call the cops, but they know there are problems.
