logo_uni_panthersAUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore sprint star Brandon Carnes will head to his first NCAA Championships after securing his ticket to Eugene today in the 200 meter dash.

The Bradenton, Fla. native extended his season after placing third in his heat of the 200 meter quarterfinal and grabbing an automatic qualifying spot. The eight-time MVC title winner finished with a time of 20.87.

Also competing in a quarterfinal today was senior Alex Wilson in the 1,500 meters. Wilson ended her career as a Panther by breaking her own school record in the event with a personal-best time of 4:18.27. Wilson finished her senior campaign with four individual school records under her belt along with a hand in three relay records.

Sebastian Barth also wrapped up his final meet in the Purple and Old Gold today, running in the quarterfinal of the 110 meter hurdles. The senior finished with a time of 14.02 in the race. Barth has been one of UNI’s most successful hurdlers in school history, claiming the indoor 60 hurdle record and representing UNI in the NCAA West Regionals all four years of his career.

Shawn Koch, who entered the West Regional ranked 44th in the triple jump, finished 23rd overall out of 48 competitors. Koch scored a huge career-best in the event, notching a mark of 50-0.50.

Wrapping up the meet for the Panthers was Jamie Lindstrom in the shot put. The junior put up a strong toss of 47-10.50 in her flight in her second consecutive trip to the NCAA West Regional.

“I thought out athletes were terrific this weekend,” head coach Dan Steele said. “This is a very tough and talented group. They represented UNI well.”

The Panthers will return to action when they send Carnes and Justin Baker to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, June 10-13.
