Clear Lake man guilty of theft, forgery and domestic assault

CLEAR LAKE – A Clear Lake man pled guilty to theft and forgery charges but dodged prison time.

Joey Speaks, age 32 of Clear Lake, pled guilty on August 27 to theft in the third degree after facing a charge of felony second degree theft. Speaks was sentenced to five years in prison (all suspended), placed on two years of probation and assessed $1,521.31 in costs and restitution.

Four felony charges of forgery were dismissed, but he pled guilty one charge of felony D forgery and one charge of domestic abuse assault, first offense. On the forgery charge, Speaks was given a five year suspended prison sentence, five years of probation and assessed $1,753.05 in court costs and restitution. He was jailed for two days and assessed $639.55 in court costs and fines for the domestic assault.

On September 5, a judge threw out a charge of criminal mischief.

Speaks was convicted in 2007 of stealing a car in Worth county. He still owes Iowa courts over $2,000 in that case.
