More than $1 million in grants awarded to Iowa communities

Des Moines – The Vision Iowa Board awarded $1,098,000 in grants to a public garden in Jefferson, community centers in Templeton and Emmetsburg, a backcountry trail in Coon Rapids and an amphitheater in Waverly last week. The grants were approved yesterday by the Vision Iowa Board at their meeting in Des Moines.

The following projects were approved for grants awarded from the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:

Thomas Jefferson Gardens of Greene County, Jefferson
Total Project Cost: $369,362
Amount Requested: $71,233
Amount Awarded: $70,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 90 days.

This project will include installation of an irrigation system, perimeter fencing, a paved walkway, moldboard plow, split rail fences, and the planting of trees, grasses and shrubs.

Templeton Community Center, Templeton
Total Project Cost: $1,738,306
Amount Requested: $200,000
Amount Awarded: $200,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 90 days.

This project includes the conversion of a former elementary school into a multi-purpose community and recreation center that will include facilities for conferences, meetings, banquets, outdoor events, camping and athletic facilities.

The Community Center at Five Island Lake, Emmetsburg
Total Project Cost: $2,649,426
Amount Requested: $357,388
Amount Awarded: $350,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 60 days.

This project includes the construction of a 10,060-square-foot community room located on the shores of Five Island Lake. The facility will include an open floor plan to serve up to 325 guests, a large main conference room with additional meeting rooms, restrooms, a spacious kitchen facility, bar, lounge, golf pro shop, storage and offices.

Opening Whiterock: Iowa’s Backcountry Trail Attraction, Coon Rapids
Total Project Cost: $4,225,890
Amount Requested: $404,785
Amount Awarded: $400,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 60 days.

This project includes the construction of 35 miles of state-of-the-art “soft trails” through a seven-square-mile landscape at Whiterock Conservancy, remodeling of the Visitors Center and trail signage.

The following project was approved for grants awarded from the River Enhancement Community Attraction and Tourism (RECAT) Fund:

Shades of Rhythm, Amphitheater Project, Waverly
Total Project Cost: $285,000
Amount Requested: $78,000
Amount Awarded: $78,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 90 days.

This project will construct an 18-foot by 90-foot amphitheater in Kohlmann Park.

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 378 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $141,615,090; 14 RECAT projects have been awarded, totaling $9,108,596. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for November 13, 2013, in Des Moines.
