BAGLAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan- Afghan National Army Special Forces captured four insurgents, including two Taliban leaders Sept. 5 during a raid in Baghlan Province’s Pul-e Khumi district.
ANASF captured Abdul Aziz, a former Afghan Local Police commander who stole 30 weapons before leaving to join enemy forces in September 2012. For the past year, he’s been planning and carrying out attacks on ALP and Afghan National Security Forces throughout the district.
Afghan forces surrounded Aziz’s compound and called for his surrender. There was no response, but an Afghan Special Forces soldier noticed a man brandishing a weapon. The Afghan soldier employed a grenade, which led to the raid. A gunfight ensued resulting in one Taliban killed.
Aziz and three others were detained. It was later confirmed that Bismullah, also a known-Taliban commander, was among the detainees. The killed insurgent was identified by the others as Hussein Paiwan, also a known-Taliban militant. Afghan forces confiscated a shotgun, pistol, six hand grenades and six cell phones.
The detainees and Paiwan’s body were turned over to the Baghlan provincial National Defense Security. There were no reports of civilian casualties or structural damages as a result of the operation.
Progress in Afghanistan is real and tangible as evident by this operation. This operation proves the capabilities of Afghan National Security Forces and is a positive sign of the progress ANSF have made to provide for their country’s security. Such gains will pave the way for other necessities, such as increased government stability and development programs.
