GARNER – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating the release of copper near Garner following a broken pipe at the Zinpro facility earlier today.

At approximately 7 a.m., the DNR was notified of a broken pipe that resulted in the release of an estimated 700 gallons of copper-containing liquid. The material then flowed into an on-site storm drain, ultimately discharging into a drainage ditch located on the west side of the facility.

Cleanup efforts are currently underway. The drainage ditch has been dammed one mile downstream of the discharge location to prevent further spread of the material. Reports of dead fish have been confirmed in Drainage Ditch 81 between the facility and Sioux Avenue in Garner. The water has displayed a blue hue, likely due to the release of copper.

Residents in the area are advised to avoid contact with water in Drainage Ditch 81.

To report a release after hours, please call the DNR’s 24-hour spill line at 515-725-8694. Quick reporting can help DNR staff identify the cause of an incident and potentially stop a fish kill in progress.
