Northern Iowa man suffers heart attack while driving and crashes car

SAC COUNTY, IOWA – A Northern Iowa man suffered a heart attack while driving and crashed his car.

On Sunday May 15, 2022, at 12:10 PM, the Sac County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Hwy 71 and 255th Street (D-36). 68-year-old Jeffrey Grodahl of Lytton, Iowa was stopped at the stop sign headed east, when his 2016 Chevrolet truck was stuck from behind by 71-year-old Jayne Barekas of Sac City. Barekas was driving a 1983 Chevrolet Caprice Classic.

Barekas is reported to have been in cardiac arrest. Witnesses pulled Barekas from the car and began Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Barekas was transported to Loring Hospital and then was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital where she was in critical condition. Grodahl was not injured in the crash.

Sac Police, Sac County EMS and Sac City and Lytton fire personnel responded to the scene.
