AMANA, IOWA – Iowa’s GDP growth is already reported to be struggling, and the hits kept coming today as appliance-maker Whirlpool announced they are letting 651 employees go due to lagging demand for their products.

The Whirlpool Corporation located in Amana, Iowa, employs roughly 2,000 employees. Today, they revealed that effective June 1, 2025, 651 of these employees will be laid off.

“Whirlpool Corporation has made necessary adjustments to production at its Amana operations to align with current market conditions driven by consumer demand,” Whirlpool said in a statement. “This has resulted in the announcement of a workforce reduction of approximately 650 employees within specific production teams at the facility. We are committed to supporting affected employees through this transition by providing access to onsite HR support and a dedicated employee support line, an employee assistance program, and guidance on unemployment benefits through Iowa Workforce Development.”

Democrats and labor leaders immediately laid blame on Governor Kim Reynolds and GOP leadership, which dominates government here.

“Kim Reynolds and Republican lawmakers’ economic policies that cater to corporations and the wealthiest Iowans are failing the majority,” The Iowa Democratic Party said.

Charlie Wishman

Charlie Wishman, an Iowa labor leader, said, “Today Whirlpool announced the layoffs of approximately 650 workers in Amana, IA. This is outrageous for a company that made 17 billion dollars in sales last year. Again, the working class is suffering at the hands of billionaires, who don’t seem to care, let alone understand.”

Governor Reynolds hadn’t yet commented on the development, but did spend the morning attacking the Governors of “blue states” – JB Pritzker of Illinois and Tim Walz of Minnesota.

“Blue-state leaders like Tim Walz spent big, but what did it get them? Minnesota faces a $6B deficit and budget cuts; Illinois is $3.2B in the hole,” she claimed.

Earlier, Iowa Democrats lashed out at data they claim shows Iowa is ranked #48 in America in GDP growth.

“Iowa’s economy isn’t just stagnating, it’s regressing. We are one of just two states where real GDP has contracted, rather than grown.”

“48 other states had better economic growth in all of 2024 than Iowa. 41 states had better economic growth than Iowa in Q4. And 650 more people lost their jobs this morning in Amana,” Democrats said.

  1. Regressive is just what Trump and Musk want, but even their MAGA supporters are fast losing confidence in them. They just lost an election that South African Nazi Musk poured millions of dollars into, with Musk even ILLEGALLY paying people to vote. Are we winning yet?

    1. Check the ruling..it was legal. Why not talk about Millions the Soros and JB governer of Illinois and Blue Sky poured in? Are you buying your way in yet?

    1. Apparently you know nothing about business. If your not selling your product you slow or stop production

      1. Oh, so you know the DOGE model? That is great. Why don’t you tell Elonga what the model is because he certainly doesn’t know.

          1. Who knows? He keeps removing items from the DOGE site when someone catches him either misrepresenting the amount of money ‘saved’ or the entire item when he finds out that the money he supposedly saved wasn’t really saved as it had already been given out or it didn’t come from taxes.
