Elderly Iowa man calls police to report he murdered his roommate

PERRY, IOWA – An elderly Iowa man allegedly murdered the person he lived with and then called police to turn himself in.

On Sunday March 16, 2025 at approximately 8:42 PM, officers with the Perry Police Department responded to 2615 Lucinda Street in Perry, Iowa, after receiving a 911 call from the residence. The caller was identified as Richard James Hoesing, a 75-year-old male, who reported that he had killed another individual, who lived at the residence with him. Hoesing was cooperative upon the officers’ arrival and was detained.

Officers located a deceased person inside the home.

Hoesing (pictured at top) was transported to the Perry Police Department and later charged with Murder in the 1st Degree, 707.2(1)(a), a class A Felony. Hoesing was transported to Dallas County Jail and booked into jail in the early morning hours of March 17, 2025.

According to Chief of Police James Archer, this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community, and the case remains under investigation.

The Perry Police Department was assisted by Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, Dallas County Emergency Medical Services, Dallas County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
