John was born December 24, 1952, and passed away on September 21, 2024. One of the family’s favorite stories was how John was born on December 24 late at night. His mother and father put him under the Christmas tree for when the kids woke up and to find one of the best Christmas presents, they have ever received.

John loved many things during his life. The most important thing to him was family. He spoke fondly of his memories of his fishing trips when he was younger. With those experiences, he loved taking his wife and kids out to local areas and teaching them to fish during the summers. He would also spend a lot of time working on cars, which was another passion of his that he passed on to his kids.

He also had a love for bowling and dirt track racing. No matter if he was hurt or not feeling well, he would go and still get well over 100 points each game he played. When his kids were old enough, he took them every Saturday morning to youth league bowling. Then he would go to the races Saturday nights with his family. Taking his grandkids to the races was a memory he cherished fondly.

John was very committed to everything in his life. He spent 48 years working at Universal in Algona and 35 years on the Algona Fire Department. John loved the family he made through the Fire Department and was very proud of being a part of that family. He also volunteered his time at the local food pantry with his brother Henry Ricke.

John was loved by many and will be missed dearly by all that had the honor of meeting him.
