In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, monetary donations may be made to the family to be applied in the future for Mylee’s (niece and godchild) secondary education.
Sam was born on September 9, 1993, the daughter of Jamie Grant and Katie Bahnsen in Mason City, Iowa. She graduated from Newman Catholic High School’s Class of 2012. She furthered her education at Allen College in the Nuclear Medicine Program, graduating in 2015. Sam started at Allen College as a Nuc. Med Tech after exploring other careers she began working May 2017 at MercyOne North Iowa in the Cardiac Cath Lab. She really wanted to get back to nuclear medicine and found part time employment in Cedar Rapids followed by a move back to Waterloo. In seeking an opportunity to gain more control of her schedule and be able to spend more time with family and friends, Sam was excited to start her new business (permanent jewelry) Simply Linked by Sam Grant.
Sam had numerous loves, her niece Mylee was at the top of her list. She also had a very special connection with Jon’s children, Addie and Adam. Her four-legged children, Denver (DD or Denver Dog), Nala, and Sylvie were the love of her life. Sam was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and frequently attended games as a season ticket holder. She was always on the hunt for unique gifts and experiences to share with others. She was a tattoo addict who always had her next appointment booked before she even got out of the chair. The number of lives that she positively impacted were countless. It didn’t matter where she went, she either had friends there already or quickly made them. Sam loved planning parties (especially surprise parties) and vacations. Her favorite location was Colorado, the mountains are where she always wanted to be. In the small amount of free time at home, she enjoyed being active by playing softball, golfing, running, and going to the gym. Running was a love hate relationship. Her collection of giraffes and gnomes could not be matched. Family and friends were a very important part of her life, she often put their needs before her own.
February 20, 2020, Sam gave a portion of her liver to a complete stranger, showing that her love for others went beyond the people that she knew. Strangers weren’t strangers for long as they quickly became friends. In addition while Sam was in college in Waterloo she worked helping in a group home to empower special needs individuals. This began her love of helping others professionally.
Those left to cherish memories of Sam are her mother, Katie Bahnsen (Jason Schmitt); father, Jamie Grant (Beth Grant); siblings, Jr Grant (Nicole Patrick), Zaila Dahlstrom; niece and Godchild, Mylee Grant; significant other, Jon Jewell and his children (Addie & Adam); Her four legged children, Denver and Nala; Maternal Great Grandmother, Marge Bahnsen; Maternal Grandparents, Tom and Tammy Bahnsen; Paternal Grandmother,Terri Dillon; Step Siblings, Sarah Wilcox, and Michael Wilcox; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends.
