He attended country school until going to high school in Rake, where he graduated in 1946. Vernon enlisted in the US Army in October 1946, spending one year in China, until he was honorably discharged in February 1948. After his discharge, he returned home to farm with his father, Carl. Vernon raised crops and enjoyed milking Holsteins for many years.

On July 9, 1955, Vernon married Georgia Voldahl. They were married for 65 years until Georgia’s death in 2020. Together, they raised two children, Amy and Jon.

The family enjoyed being involved in the Rake community and Zion Lutheran Church. Vernon served on the Zion church council as well as many other church committees. Rake was very important to him and he enjoyed being involved in town activities and projects, especially the annual Lutefisk Supper. Vernon was a 4-H leader for a number of years and enjoyed working with the neighborhood members on their projects. Vernon served on the boards of Winnebago Rural Electric Coop and Winnebago Coop Telephone for many years. He was an active and loyal Legion member until his passing. Vernon enjoyed his daily trips to Rake for coffee with friends. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and many stories, as well as a wealth of knowledge of Rake and family history. He enjoyed raising flowers and gardening on his family farm, where he lived his entire life until moving to assisted living at age 89.

Vernon is survived by his daughter, Amy Jones and husband Kent, and their son, David, and his son, Jon and wife Tami, and their son, Aaron. He is also survived by his sister, Lavonne Jergenson, and many Jacobson and Voldahl family members.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Georgia, his brother Maynard and wife Edith, sister Clarine Steinberg and husband Jack, brother Duane and wife Marcia and brother-in-law Obert Jergenson.

Vernon will be buried at the Rake East Cemetery.

The family is very appreciative of the care Vernon received at both Mills Harbor Assisted Living and Lake Mills Care Center.
