Mason City man fresh out of jail caught drunk driving

MASON CITY – A Mason City man who allegedly tried to steal booze apparently drank too much and got behind the wheel, leading to another arrest and a trip to jail.

Mason City police stopped a vehicle for expired registration on October 27 at about 4:41 PM near 6th Street SW and Jackson Avenue. After an investigation, the driver, Bert Leroy Roberts, age 60 of Mason City, was arrested for first-offense operating while intoxicated and other traffic offenses, including open container of alcohol, no registration and no license.

Roberts was taken to the county jail, booked and released, awaiting a November 10 court hearing.

Roberts had just been released from jail on October 27, records show, on four theft charges brought by Mason City police. He is accused of stealing from various retailers on September 5, 16, 24 and 27. He will face a non-jury trial December 8.

Back on August 9, Roberts Jr. allegedly tried to leave the Mason City Fareway store without paying for a pack of Uncle Mike’s Hard Lemonade valued at $17.71.  Roberts was arrested on a charge of fifth-degree theft and taken to the county jail for processing.  Roberts was banned from returning to the Fareway store property. He faces a non-jury trial on December 8 in that case, too, as well as an additional theft charge from July 29.
