Restaurant reviews might be on the horizon

NIT Opinion –

North Iowa food can be delicious.
North Iowa food can be delicious.

The Restaurant Review has been absent from NIT, but it may be time to make that absence a thing of the past.

Food is a huge part of our lives, and everyone has an opinion.  Seems like a logical fit for NIT to discuss the food in these parts.  And we’d be interested in hearing about what you think about our local eateries.  Just keep it honest and truthful, should you decide to share your thoughts.

Most of our readers are aware, the cuisine in North Iowa generally fits into three categories: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.  The service we receive can be classified similarly.  Food quality and service would be logical things to discuss if Restaurant Reviews are to be published here.

Really, restaurants don’t just serve a meal; they serve motivation to write or talk about the experience they just put their guest through.  And a meal is an experience for guests.  You pay good money to be brought some decent food, something you can safely put in your mouth and feel like it tastes good and won’t leave you lurching over the porcelain throne.  The experience is either positive or negative, it is always discussed, and deservedly so.

Truthfully, after any experience dining out, we all say to ourselves something like “That was a dam good pizza” or we leave a restaurant and say to our date “the waitress was rude”.  There’s always an opinion.

Anyway, here’s three quick snapshots of what you might expect when eating out in Mason City, based on real experiences:

The Good: Chop Restaurant.  Staff is well-dressed and polite.  Food is usually cooked to perfection.  Prices are about right.  Great atmosphere.  Salads always fresh, steaks always high quality.  Rarely, if ever, will you leave dis-satisfied with your experience there.

The Bad: Last experience at Wok N Roll wasn’t pleasant.  Just went in to pick up a sesame chicken for take out.  The bill was $9.17.  Lady greeter says “you no want your 17 cents?” I say, well, I guess not.  Not really a typical question, someone asks if you don’t even want your change back.  So I hand her a twenty dollar bill and she hands me back a ten.  Kept my 83 cents.  Kinda irked me, but what the hell, it’s 83 cents.  Wouldn’t even be a big deal except that the sesame chicken was inedible.  An industrial meat grinder couldn’t have minced this substance into chunks small enough to swallow.  It was disgusting.  In the end, overpaid for the heel of a cowboy boot drowning in sesame syrup. So, for scamming the 83 cents you just bought yourself an empty chair a couple times a month.

The Ugly: Anything from Little Caesar’s Pizza.  Have you tried their pretzel crust pizza?  Downright awful.  One bite and you will spit it out.  If you are that big of a cheapskate or broke, just buy a $1 Totino’s Party Pizza and cook it at home instead.

NIT may introduce Restaurant Reviews.  Just keep watching the Watercooler and they may appear from time to time.  If you want to send in a review, you know how to contact our newsroom: Email NorthIowaToday@gmail.com.
