MASON CITY – A Garner woman who was allegedly turned in by her sister for stealing her checkbook and using it to buy a cell phone was brought to Cerro Gordo county to serve a jail sentence.
Monica Kay Carey is serving 30 days in the Cerro Gordo County Jail for violating the terms of her probation related to her guilty plea to felony D forgery. Mason City police had alleged that Carey had stolen her sister’s checkbook in January of 2013 and bought a $549.99 cell phone in Mason City. The woman’s checking account was closed prior to the forgery and she reported that the checks were stolen and used without her permission.
Carey was supposed to pay restitution and court fees of $1,317.63, but never made a single payment, thus violating her probation. The courts issued an arrest warrant and brought her over from the Hancock County Jail to serve her 30 day jail sentence.
