MASON CITY – A convicted felon who entered a North End gas station bathroom late Friday night and refused to come out was ultimately arrested after emergency responders were diverted to the scene.
An employee at the Kum N Go gas station, 1224 North Federal Avenue, called police Friday evening at about 10:45 PM to report that a man had entered the restroom and locked the door and was not responding. It was reported that the man had been in the restroom for an extended period of time and had initially responded to questions and then fell silent. When police and emergency responders arrived, the man was said to have mumbled responses to questions. Police soon gained entry and it was determined that the subject, Brandon Blake Slater, age 33, was intoxicated.
Slater was placed under arrest and taken to the Cerro Gordo County Jail, where he quickly plead guilty to a charge of public intoxication and was released from the jail.
Slater is a convicted felon, accused of numerous domestic assaults, child endangerment, criminal mischief, and serious assaults, mainly in Polk County. In a 2009 felony conviction for willful injury, Slater was charged $18,792.13 in court fees, charges, fines and restitution. He still owes $17,513.96.

They mayor loves the low lifes of this town…he may not want to associate with them…but thats what he needs, that and low paying jobs …. criminals and drug addicts don’t vote usually …the more there is the merrier he is. Low paying jobs he thinks keep the citizens under his thumb…no one has the funds or time to go against him… a poor community is what these type of bookmeyers need to survive and the only way they do. Until the majority stand up and demand a change there will be no change….. if it were me during the election I would have personally invested in helping the lower income vote, absentee voting …knowing statistics show they just don’t get out and vote. Bookmeyer and his cronies gathered the rich, promised favors and collected absentee votes, helped them vote, and the big part …. they are partnered with crooked mercy. Mercy docs and certain employees voted for them because of promises and under the table dealings….. they have to stick together or the crooked things let to happen just might not fly if others we’re voted in. Lol and knowing how they scrambled around getting their votes was comical ….. they were very stressed they we’re going to loose…. just wait for things to unfold as their crazy promises to certain people and places unfold….. light will be shone….. hopefully everyone will learn from it and vote them out next time.

Some may criticize your headlines or content BUT that is what is needed to get the readers these days. Your headlines are what make people click on them and read them, excellent way to to get people to read! !! If it isn’t eye catching people by pass to much. It’s the change of the times. None seem to be far out of line. Most complaints are irrelevant! It is good to know places and people to be cautious about and you give us that and much more. You also allow away for people to comment and get info out that would not be exposed if it could not be annonimous. Slowly people are speaking up exposing letting the community know what is really going on. In the last year you have made a big difference in the road for change it will eventually happen, just will take alot of hard work…but will be worth it! Don’t give up… this last election was lost but it was a win… more people are becoming aware! Bookmeyer and his cronies are feeling the pressure …they we’re scrabbling, fearful, and pulled out all stops behind the scenes. I don’t think they would have came close to winning without Mercy. It is a huge employer of the community and when they insinuate Mercy will no longer be if things don’t stay the same…scares employees into voting a certain way, afraid they might not have a job/employer… what they don’t realize is that if the crooked management of Mercy and the city council we’re changed both would still be there… only being run by better, honest, people for the community, the people as a whole prospering and moving ahead, instead of the hole they keep us in now. Keep up the good work, so many of us appreciate it!!!

Along with getting us involed in two war fronts that cost tax payers & the country a billion dollars a week for over 8 years. George W. Bush also cut state & national programs to keep people like this off the street which explains why there are more & more people like this roaming the strees across the country involved with crime. If you voted for Bush then you helped create this problem & you have no right to complain.

LVS: I am wondering. Could u explain why you call these people liberals and socialists? Most of these low lifes are gun toting conservatives…..Most liberals and socialists are tree hugging, peaceful people. They give of their time and talents to relevant causes and try to make the world a better place. They bleed red, white and blue. At least that is my experience over the past 60 years.
If you mean they are users of the system and don’t pay their fines and continue with their felonious lives without a thought, then I agree. They continue to have children and the cycle of abuse, drugs, serious domestic assaults, rampant alcoholism, sexual abuse, thefts, robberies, etc. just never seem to end.
My grandma lived in the north end and was a wonderful mother and grandmother and she was a democrat, which equals liberal. I don’t see her fitting your description.
Socialists don’t usually get out of line, since they live in societies where they are told what to do, how to act and what to think– in other words Communism… they are adjectives for one another.
Most liberals that I know are decent law-biding citizens. People like that gal that ran for office, Jodi Draper and Jack Hatch that is going for governor and Bruce Braley for US Senate.. etc. John Stone, Dean Genth, Mary Beth Greenan, and those people who were trying to do the right thing for our city….

@Just a Thought-you have some of it right. A Democrat is not always a liberal. There are Blue Dog Democrats of which I was one who are conservative’s. However, in the last 10 or 15 years the progressive liberals have taken over the Democratic Party. You can tell by the God haters that are now controlling it as well as “The I have a right to everything” even though I do not work crowd. The Old Democrats were hard working working people who had values. The socialist are the next thing to communist. I know Jody Draper very well and a I can not think of a more decent, nicer young lady. I value her opinion very much. However, what I refer to as the libraterds are a whole other story. My wife and brother in laws are Democrats and they dislike the libraterds as much as I do. You see, we worked for what we have. No one gave us anything and we never asked for anything. That is the way old Democrats think. I am no longer a Democrat and am now an Independent. That lets me pick and choose who I vote for. I hope that it explains it somewhat. There is more to it of course but that is a start.
@Thought-In addition, I do know Mary Beth Greenan somewhat and I think she is a nice lady from what I have seen. She must be or Jodi would not have had her for a campaign manager. The other folks you mentioned I am not familiar with. If you say they are OK I will believe you.
