MASON CITY – The Second Annual Hayden’s Hope Warrior Run wa held at Central Park today.
Hayden Despenas was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia, or FA, in March of 2012. Since then the Despenas family have been actively trying to raise money to find a cure.
Despite the threat of rain showers, the Hayden Warriors took their spots at the starting line at 9:00 am. The long distance 5K/10K run/walk was under way with Hayden leading the way on the back of a two seater bike.
“There were about 200 runners this year, a little less than last year,” said Sarah Despenas, mom of Hayden. “This could to due to the kids having other activites, such as soccer games, etc. We still had a good turnout and there’s lots to do.”
There were sprint races planned for 11:00 am following the long distance run. The was a bake sale and raffle, food vendors and a kids carnival, including bouncy balloons. For music, Betty & the Gents would be playing at 10:00 am, with The Grant Family Circus playing throughout the day.
“This is Hayden’s day, it’s all about Him,” said Sarah.
