Osage police warn of fraudulent letter, scam

osage iowa policeOSAGE – Osage police today are warning of a fraudulent letter and potential scam.

Osage police said Tuesday that “We have received numerous reports of a suspicious letter mailed to residents of Osage. The letter is from “American” stating that you have qualified for 2 round trip airline tickets. They are signed by an “Ali Dunn”. All have different handwriting on the letters and envelopes and have been mailed from Phoenix, AZ.”

Police are saying now that the letter is a scam and warning residents “Do not call the number, do not give out any personal information. Please contact us if you have any questions 641-732-3777.”

Later Tuesday morning, Osage police reported that:

The letters have been sent all over the United States all in the same manner. Some have called the number and this is the information they have received and reported to us:

-Meetings were being set up at the Clarion Inn in Mason City this week and next week at different times.
-Stated they were a new travel agency trying to get started in the area.
-Stated they were selling timeshares.
-Gave a bogus web site address.
-Geared towards couples and if you are a single person they ask that you pass on the letter to a couple and then offer you a different package where you would need to pay all the fees, costs etc.
-Were asked to bring a picture ID and Credit Card to the meeting.

We encourage you to be diligent not only in this case but with all unwanted solicitations of prizes that you have won and anyone asking for personal information. Contact your local police department with any suspicious mail, calls or emails.

I got mine today. guess that means Im somebody now.

I got one of those. Said they have been trying to contact me for several months. Didn’t think I was that hard to find. Wonder how this is any different than all the typical time-share, credit card or “free stuff” offers we get any other day?

Somebody was probably silly enough to fall for it.
