(DES MOINES) On April 2, Senator Amanda Ragan and other lawmakers talked with University of Iowa students about the importance of affordable, high quality public universities to Iowa.

“Last year, legislators worked together to provide enough state dollars to keep Iowa tuition increases below the national average of 7 percent for in-state undergraduate students,” said Ragan. “I want every Iowa kid who works hard to have the opportunity to go as far as they can. Those kids will be our state’s next generation of leaders.”

This year, the universities say they can freeze in-state undergraduate tuition for next year if the Legislature can provide an additional $21 million.
Graduates of Iowa’s public universities make up a significant portion of the state’s working professionals.

“It’s a great opportunity to share what the University of Iowa is doing and what we can accomplish for the state of Iowa,” said Guzman-Velez.

  1. If these people want an education, they will find a way to get the money. It’s not the taxpayers job to fund losers who think the world owes them a living.

  2. All Amanda knows how to do is spend money that is not hers and she don’t have. Always votes for the takers not the makers feeds all them lazy fat scum that votes her in with our money. Time to go honey your part of the problem. Looks like she been dipping her fat hands too many times in her community cookie jar to. She is about as good at watching our money as she is at losing weight. She should flea the Capitol and join a gym and go on weight watchers.

  3. It seems to me that there has developed a disconnect between the costs of public universities and state legislatures due to the advent of the federal student loan program. Universities have been able to freely escalate their tuition and fees as long as FSA was available to fund student loans. Given the reported levels of student loans and defaults, it may well be time for states to step up and rein in these increases by reconnecting the link.

  4. Well let’s see. There are 2 ways to reduce the price of tuition. Cut unnecessary expenses at universities or raise our taxes.

    Which will Amanda choose…….Hmmmmmm
