Upmeyer: “It is exciting to be in a battleground state”

I was privileged to have Dean Arthur Ssweranga from the Makerere University School of Business in Uganda and Professor Jimmy Senteza from Drake University in Des Moines, accompanied by Representative Scott Raecker, and his wife Martha, stop by my office this week. We had a great discussion about the upcoming election- how the process works, the importance of exercising our right to vote, and our incredible democratic system.

From Rep. Linda Upmeyer –

As Election Day draws closer and closer, you may be feeling frustrated with the endless political ads on television and longing for the days of simply receiving plain old junk mail in your mailbox. While it is exciting to be in a battleground state, it can be wearing at times. In Iowa, we have a real opportunity to make a difference in this year’s election. Many believe Iowa’s six electoral votes could be the determining factor in the presidential outcome.

With campaign fatigue at its peak, it’s important to remain mindful of the importance and greatness of our nation’s democratic process. We must remember what a privilege it is to have the ability to vote for the candidates of our choice to represent us at the local, state, and federal levels. It truly is amazing to look back at the system our Founding Fathers put in place over 200 years ago and see that it is still working in a fair and just manner today.

Among the many races on the ballot this year, is the opportunity to vote for your State Representative. Today, I ask for your support on November 6. As your State Representative, I promise to continue to fight for job creation, real tax relief and reform, and responsible and stable budgets.

Over the past three newsletters, I have told you about the unified initiative between House Republicans, Senate Republicans, and Governor Branstad, known as Iowa Strong. We think it’s important to tell Iowans what to expect if they choose to elect us. The Iowa Strong plan is comprised of three components: Strong Economy, Strong Budgetary Leadership, and Strong Schools and Communities. We are committed to fighting for a more prosperous Iowa economy, promoting a more efficient and effective state government, and encouraging an even greater quality of life in our state. We have a great opportunity to retain control of the Iowa House and hit the ground running on January 14 when the State Legislature convenes.

We have made great strides for our state since gaining the Majority in 2010 and we will continue to fight for you. Our commitment to balancing the budget by sticking to our three core principles of not spending more than we take in, not using one-time funds for ongoing expenses, and not underfunding our commitments to simply pay them off later down the road, has proven to restore fiscal order in our state. Standing by these principles has meant we went from spending $1.18 for every dollar in revenue three years ago, to $0.97 today. These are the same commonsense principles Iowa families and businesses live by, and state government should as well.

We have accomplished a lot in the last two years, but there is still more work to be done and I look forward to continuing to represent your best interests at the State Capitol next year.

As the waning days of the 2012 General Election draw to a close and your ability to endure the political onslaught continues to decline, please keep in mind the sacrifice that our Founding Fathers and today’s U.S. military have given in order for you to freely cast your ballot at the polls on Election Day. I hope you will not only turn out to vote on November 6, but encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to exercise their unique right as American citizens to cast their vote as well.

As always, I appreciate hearing your thoughts and concerns. If you have any feedback, please don’t hesitate to contact me at linda.upmeyer@legis.state.ia.us or 515-281-4618.
