LYON COUNTY, IOWA — A South Dakota man has died following a collision between a pickup truck and a BNSF train in rural Lyon County on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 12:33 PM on March 17, 2026. Investigators determined that 39-year-old Kyle Madetzke of Baltic, South Dakota, was traveling westbound on 110th Street in a 2026 Ford F350. As Madetzke approached the railroad crossing west of Dogwood Avenue, he failed to yield to a southbound BNSF train engine.

The train collided with the pickup truck at the crossing, causing the vehicle to roll and catch fire. Madetzke, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on-site by Lyon County Secondary Roads, Trackside Towing, and the BNSF Railway. The fatal crash remains under investigation by state authorities.
