Douglas D. Ellingson, 75, of Alden, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at the Alden United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in the Alden Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 4:30–7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, also at the Alden United Methodist Church. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.
Doug was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa, to Burnell and Marvel (Schroeder) Ellingson. He graduated from Alden High School in 1968, then attended Ellsworth Community College for two years and Iowa State University for an additional year and a half. After his studies, Doug returned home to Alden to do what he loved most—farm.
In 1972, he married Verona Winters, and together they raised three children before divorcing in 1988. In 1995, Doug met Lois Klein, who became his devoted companion for 30 years.
A lifelong farmer, Doug raised hogs and cattle and grew corn and soybeans. He was a member of the Popejoy and Alden United Methodist Churches. He loved watching his children and grandchildren in their many activities and enjoyed county fairs, the Iowa State Fair, and farm shows. He was happiest watching Westerns or cheering on the Cyclones.
Doug was well known for his love of green tractors and Chevy pickups, as well as his gift for fixing anything—or building something new out of whatever he had on hand. In difficult times, he was known to talk things over with his cattle. He was always ready to lend a hand to a neighbor or friend.
Doug is survived by his longtime partner, Lois Klein; his children Jason (Amanda) Ellingson of Ames, Jennie (Jim) Rush of La Vista, Nebraska, and Chris (Mindy) Ellingson of Polk City; grandchildren Grace, Elle, Sam, Claire, Jack, and Emily; and his sister, Janaan (Duane) Harding of Alden.
He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
