MASON CITY – This convicted felon on probation for her previous crimes fed Mason City police a tall tale about her stabbed hubby, but cops were having none of her games, and she now faces yet another serious charge that could land her in an Iowa prison.
Mason City police tell NIT that on October 21, 2025, at 10:08 PM, 32-year-old Kellieann Michelle Barreras called police to report her husband was stabbed in the abdomen earlier, at 8:30 PM, but was only now experiencing severe abdominal pain.
“Officers responded and met with Barreras and Aaron Ryan Janssen,” an MCPD spokesman told NIT. “Janssen said he was out for a walk in East Park earlier that night when a unknown female stabbed him in the stomach. He said he came home around 8 PM after getting stabbed. Both subjects told police he refused to go to the hospital. Kellieann said she laid down but was awakened at 10 PM when Janssen was screaming about his abdominal pain. Janssen was transported to Mercy Hospital by Mason City Fire Dept to be treated for his stab wound at 10:38 PM.”
Mason City police officers began investigating the reported stabbing by the unknown female in East Park. Soon, discrepancies in the story combined with lack of evidence or witnesses cast doubt on the reported version of events. Police executed a search warrant at the Barreras residence on October 22, 2025. Officers reinterviewed Janssen after he was released from the hospital. Janssen finally admitted he had stabbed himself.
“Barreras allegedly made a false report then for various reasons,” the spokesman continued.
Barreras (pictured at top) was arrested on November 16, 2025, on a charge of False Reports to Public Safety, a violation of Iowa code 718.6(2)(a), a class D forcible felony. She was held in the Cerro Gord until she was released on her own recognizance on November 17. She now awaits preliminary hearing set for December 3.
Records show Barreras is a convicted felon out of Decorah, Iowa, for class D felony second-degree theft. She was given a light sentence of 5 years of probation in 2023 at her sentencing, along with a suspended 5-year prison sentence, and an order to pay Iowa courts $5,444.35, even as a $1,025 fine was suspended. That all just might change if her probation is violation, however.
Later, in 2024, Barreras was accused of making a false report to police in Winneshiek county, but the charge was dismissed.
