Judy K. Johnson, age 72, of Boone, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the Hearth Stone Memory Care Unit in Boone.
Judy was born on April 29, 1953 in Boone, the daughter of LeRoy and Edith (Long) Walker.
Judy enjoyed trap-shooting. When she was sixteen, she was the runner up in the Women’s Division at State. While at Iowa Zone Finals, Judy won the Junior Championship, for ages 14-18, with a score of 191 of 200. At the same competition, she won the Handicap Division against all the competitors with a score of 98 of 100. She went on to win the Midland Empire Junior Championship in Billings, Montana, in August of 1968. Judy won fifteen patches shooting 25-50 birds in a row.
She was united in marriage to John Scott Cherveny on October 22, 1971. From this union, a daughter, Ginger was born. Scott passed away July 24, 1974.
Judy was united in marriage to Jerry Dean Johnson on June 25, 1976. From this union, a daughter, Jo was born. Jerry passed away November 9, 2011.
Judy worked at the Cattlemen’s Association in Ames, Crop Production Services in Boone, with her husband, Jerry at J & J Concrete in Boone and then at Iowa State University, where she worked until her retirement in 2014.
She was an avid Hawkeye fan, and was a season ticket holder to University of Iowa basketball and football. Judy’s prized possession was her Hawkeye stain glass light, which was made by the stain glass that was removed from her family home. As long as the Hawks were winning, the light shined proudly. If the Hawks lost, the light was turned off.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, John Scott Cherveny; second husband, Jerry Dean Johnson; brother, Allen Walker; and sister, Mary Jane Walters.
Judy is survived by her daughters, Ginger (Bill Riehl) Wiebers of Boone and Jo (Chris) Capps of Ogden; step-daughter, Nona (Terry) Schwandt of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Baillie (Brian Click) Wiebers of Kansas City, MO, Rylee Wiebers of Boone, Wyatt Schellenberg of Ogden, Lukas Schellenberg of Ogden, Austin Schellenberg of Ames, Kristen Arnold of Mt. Vernon, Tyler Schwandt of Cedar Rapids, and TJ Schwandt of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, 1006 6th Street, Boone.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at 6th and Marshall Streets in Boone.
