Four NIACC basketball players earn all-American status

MASON CITY – History was made in the NIACC women’s and men’s basketball programs on Thursday.

Three NIACC women’s basketball players received all-American honors and sophomore David Humphries became the school’s first two-time basketball all-American.

Sophomore Chelsey Jacox was a first-team NJCAA Division II selection becoming the school’s second women’s basketball player to earn first-team status.

Sophomore Lateeka Thompson was selected to the second team and freshman Cortni Rush was a third-team selection.

The three were the first NIACC women’s basketball players to earn all-American honors since Katherine Hadley was a first-team selection in 1994. Other NIACC all-Americans are Jennifer Currier (honorable mention in 1988), Lynn Cuvelier (honorable mention in 1983), Terri Helgeson (second team in 1977) and Deb Houg (second team in 1976).

Jacox (Plymouth, Minn.) averaged 22.5 points with 194 assists and 88 steals during her sophomore season as NIACC claimed its first Region XI title since 1994 and placed third at the NJCAA Division II national tournament. Jacox is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,182 career points and career assist leader with 307.

Jacox has verbally committed to the University of San Francisco.

Thompson (Burnsville, Minn.) averaged 12.7 points and 6.4 rebounds in the 2013-14 season with 97 assists and 102 steals. Thompson ranks eighth on the school’s all-time scoring list (880 points), fifth on the all-time rebounding list (375), eighth on the all-time assists list (168) and third on the all-time steals list (176).

Rush (Mason City) averaged 14.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Rush led the team with 84 3-point goals, which ranks sixth on the school’s all-time career list.

Rush has verbally committed to Drake University.

Humphries (Adelaide, Australia) was selected to the NJCAA Division II third-team all-American team after being a first-team selection as a freshman.

NIACC’s other men’s basketball all-American are Nick Stromer (second team in 2011), Clyde McCulley (third team in 2000) and Ron Angell (third team in 1978).

“We are extremely proud of Dave’s accomplishments,” NIACC coach Mark Mohl said. “It is a very well deserved honor.

“Not only is Dave a terrific basketball player, but he is also an outstanding student and a great person. It shows that with hard work and determination great things can happen. To be a 2-time all-American is a special honor.”

Humphries averaged 21.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game to lead NIACC, which was 21-12. He also had 96 assists and 60 steals. Humphries scored 1,190 career points (3rd on school’s all-time list) and had 460 rebounds (12th on school’s career list), 216 assists (11th on school’s all-time list) and 132 3-point goals (5th on school’s all-time list).

Humphries had two career triple-doubles and 18 career double-doubles.

Iowa Lakes’ sophomore Deondre Parks was a first-team all-American selection and DMACC sophomore Brandon Nazione was a second-team all-American pick.
