MASON CITY – The trial of a Marshalltown man accused of first degree murder and abuse of a corpse that was held in Mason City ended with a conviction on a lesser charge.

A Cerro Gordo county jury found Jeremy Gartin, age 30, guilty of voluntary manslaughter, abuse of a corpse and carrying a concealed weapon in the Oct. 1 death of the 59-year-old Garwin man, according to the Marshalltown Times-Republican.  The jury deliberated about 4 hours.

Gartin had shot a 59 year-old Iowa man, David Warnell, in the head when the Warnell failed to deliver enough meth to him on October 1, 2013. Gartin then allegedly attempted to remove identifying fingers, tattoos and teeth. Warnell’s body was discovered at Gartin’s home.

Gartin faces up to 17 years in prison and will be sentenced in Marshall county on February 3rd, 2014.

  1. Got just exactly what he deserved. I am sure the Judge will give him the maximum sentence. Following the facts of the case the jury did a great job. Now it is up to the Judge to sentence correctly.
