Iowa AFL-CIO disappointed and concerned about closing of Iowa Juvenile home

DES MOINES – The Governor’s unilateral action to close and outsource the work at the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo, came as a surprise and is very disappointing.

This decision is not in the best interests of those young women that need the services this facility provides.

This will create an economic hardship on both the workers and the community.

AFSCME has been working with state government along with a task force to correct any issues at this facility.

We hope that the Iowa Workforce Development will respond to these workers in the same manner they would with any other facility closing, assisting the employees and the community during this unfortunate time.

  1. If they hadn’t priced themselves out of the market they wouldn’t have to worry about it. It is just a start. States are going to contract out more and more because it is cheaper and they do not have long time commitments like lifetime pensions and insurance.

  2. Yup, the AFL-CIO & AFSCME are the ones I’d go to for an unbiased opinion on the closing of the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo.
I’m really sure the “best interests of (the) young women” are at the forefront of their concerns.
    BS
