WASHINGTON – For the first time in nearly two decades, the United States is importing less foreign oil than it is producing domestically — and using less overall, the White House reported Saturday.

In his weekly address, President Obama discussed progress in American energy and highlighted that the U.S. is less dependent on foreign oil for the first time in about 20 years.

“We reached this milestone in part not only because we’re producing more energy, but because we’re wasting less energy,” Mr. Obama explained. “We set new fuel standards for our cars and trucks so that they’ll go twice as far on a gallon of gas by the middle of the next decade. That’s going to save an average driver more than $8,000 at the pump over the life of a new car. We also launched initiatives to put people to work upgrading our homes, businesses, and factories so that they waste less energy.

“More good jobs. Cheaper and cleaner sources of energy. A secure energy future. Thanks to the grit and resilience of American businesses and the American people, that’s where we’re heading. And as long as I’m President, that’s where we’re going to keep heading – to leave our children a stronger economy, and a safer planet.”

  1. The private sector came up with and implemented horizontal drilling combined with fracturing which has generated a huge increase in the volume of natural gas.
The impulse to increase vehicle mileage came a long time before this guy & nothing drives it more that the price of fuel. Tell me, what did this pretense of a leader do to increase production of energy?? NOTHING!!
Instead he created barriers to leasing for drilling and used EPA to hinder expansion of distribution – Keystone pipeline anyone?
Now he wants to latch onto anything that is having some success and claim it for himself to divert attention from the Obamacare screw up.

  2. The biggest mess in the history of the U.S. by this man and his administration and you print this BS. He had no more to do with it than he has a right to be in office. Iowa is chuck full of sheep who have never seen the other side of a cornfield, thanks alot for supporting this debacle!!!
